The Continental assembly of the Comboni Missionaries working with indigenous peoples in Latin America took place in Mexico City from the18th to 23rd of February 2013. While pastoral work with indigenous peoples was talked about in other meetings at the continental level (in La Paz, Mexico, 1974, in Lima, Peru, in 1991, in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil, in 1995 and at the meeting of continental secretariats in Quito, Ecuador, in 2000) this is the first continental assembly exclusively devoted to such a commitment. In the open letter the confreres working with the indigenous peoples of the American continent emphasize important aspects of their work:
- Identify and work with those among the indigenous peoples who most suffer from injustice, the destruction of their cultural heritage and prejudices.
- The need for preparation to work with these people.
- To help that a truly autochthonous and ministerial church be formed.
- To accompany these peoples in their struggle for justice and, together with them, be a channel of dialogue with the society to inform on their life and condemn injustices.
