Ho trovato l’articolo di Boaventura de Sousa Santos, professore portoghese di sociologia all’università di Coimbra e co-fondatore del Foro Sociale Mondiale, molto illuminante e equilibrato. Lo scrittore smaschera le contraddizioni di una società, quella occidentale, che, dopo gli assassini dei giornalisti della rivista francese Charlie Hebdo, è pronta ad innalzare la bandiera della libertà di espressione, della tolleranza, del valore della vita umana, tranne, poi, contraddirsi sull’applicazione di quegli stessi valori ad altri che non sono della stessa cultura e modo di pensare. “È possibile” si domanda il professore, “che la difesa del secolarismo sfrenato in un’Europa interculturale, dove molte persone non si identificano con questo particolare valore, sia di per sé una forma di estremismo?”  Il vero scontro, sostiene l’autore dell’articolo, non è tra le civiltà ma tra vari fanatismi.

I have found the article by Boaventura de Sousa Santos, Portuguese professor of Sociology at the University of Coimbra and co-founder of the World Social Forum, very enlightening and balanced. The author exposes the contradictions of the Western society which, after the killing of the journalists from the French magazine Charlie Hebdo, is ready to raise the banner of freedom of expression, tolerance and the value of human life - only to contradict itself on the application of those same values to other people not belonging to the same culture and way of thinking. “Could it be”, the professor asks,  “that the defence of unrestrained secularism in an intercultural Europe, where many people do not identify with this particular value, is itself a form of extremism?”.  The real battle, asserts the article’s author, is not between civilizations but between various fanaticism.
