Mission to the City - Missione nella città

Fr. Maurizio Binaghi:

Urban ministry is by now no longer just the new frontier of mission but it is a call to act pastorally in our cities’ ghettoes and slums. However, urban ministry is also a challenge: a challenge because –in order to be effective ministers- we have to assume the attitude of the disciples: learning and listening to God’s word and inspiration first, but also to the people of the city and to their real needs.

If there is one important lesson I have learned is that a true minister in urban settings must live among the people he serves, learn from them and, when it is the case, be ready to struggle and suffer with them.

The following article is a summary of some my researches and studies together with the experience I had in 12 years in Chicago working with inner city African-American youth: definitely the poorest and most abandoned in the USA. 

I like to think that the part about inserted communities may further the discussion about this still somehow controversial topic, providing a new perspective for this important (but certainly not the only one) “mission” for our present and our future as Comboni Missionaries.

La missione urbana oggi non è più solamente la nuova frontiera della missione ma è soprattutto un forte invito ad una seria e convinta presenza pastorale nelle periferie e nelle baraccopoli delle grandi città.  La missione urbana presenta una doppia sfida: per essere presenza credibile nei contesti urbani, il missionario deve mettersi in ascolto, prima di  Dio e della sua ispirazione, ma anche imparare ad ascoltare veramente l’umanità che vive e soffre nelle periferie e nelle baraccopoli.

Se c’è una lezione importante che ho imparato è che un autentico missionario, nei contesti urbani, deve vivere con la gente che serve ma soprattutto deve essere aperto ad imparare da loro e, quando necessario, lottare e soffrire con loro.

L’articolo che segue è un riassunto di alcune mie ricerche e studi, arricchiti dalla mia esperienza di 12 anni con i giovani Afroamericani del ghetto di Chicago: senza dubbio i più poveri ed abbandonati negli Stati Uniti.  

Mi piace pensare che la parte dell’articolo riguardante le comunità inserite possa aiutare la discussione attorno a questo importante (ma certamente non l’unico!) modo di “essere missione” per il nostro presente e il nostro futuro come Missionari Comboniani.
