Current State of Islam in the Sub-Saharan Africa

P. Felix Phiri, dell’Istituto dei Missionari d’ Africa,  provinciale della Provincia dell’Africa del sud e, prima dell’attuale compito,  insegnante di Studi Islamici al Pontificio Istituto di Studi Arabi e Islamistica a Roma e al Tangaza College (Nairobi – Kenya), ha offerto il suo contributo nell’ultima riunione del Gruppo di Riflessione sull’ Islam  (Lilongwe – Malawi 26-28 Novembre 2018). P. Phiri ha offerto una panoramica storica sul modo in cui l’Islam si è esteso in Africa e quali sono gli strumenti e le modalità in cui l’Islam si sta espandendo nell’Africa al sud del Sahara. Attualmente, ha sottolineato p. Phiri.  l’Islam si propaga in tre modi: attraverso organizzazioni e reti che si concentrano sulla Da'wa (l'intensa propagazione dell’Islam attraverso il lavoro missionario); il Jihad ; l’islamizzazione della società nel senso di cambiamenti pianificati e organizzati progettati per migliorare l'individuo e la società conformandoli alle norme islamiche. 

Fr Felix Phiri, of the Institute of the Missionaries of Africa, provincial of the Province of Southern Africa and, prior to the current commitment, teacher of Islamic Studies at the Pontifical Institute for Arabic and Islamic Studies in Rome and at Tangaza College (Nairobi - Kenya), offered his contribution at the last meeting of the Reflection Group on Islam (Lilongwe - Malawi 26-28 November 2018). Fr. Phiri presented a historical overview of the way Islam spread in Africa and the ways in which Islam is expanding in Africa south of the Sahara today. At present, Fr. Phiri pointed out, Islam propagates in three ways: through organizations and networks that focus on the Da'wa (the intense propagation of Islam through missionary work); the Jihad, and the Islamization of society in the sense of planned and organized changes designed to improve the individual and society by conforming them to Islamic norms.
