At the synod of bishops, three modes of listening to the young - Al sinodo dei vescovi: tre modi di ascoltare i giovani

The bishops, who were called to Rome for this monthlong meeting to discuss the church's outreach to the young, have been urged by Pope Francis to listen to one another and especially to young people. Many bishops are taking the church's traditional approach of looking to its theology for ideas and attempting to impose them on reality. This does not work today. Pope Francis has been critical of ideologues of both the right and left who attempt to impose their ideas on people without considering the reality of people's lives. As Francis has said, "Facts are more important than ideas." A second approach to listening is to hear what young people think about the church in order to discover how the church must change. The third approach to listening is to teach the young to listen to their better selves and to hear in it the Spirit.

I vescovi, che sono stati invitati a Roma per questo incontro durato un mese per discutere come la chiesa possa parlare ai giovani, sono stati sollecitati da Papa Francesco ad ascoltarsi e soprattutto ascoltare i giovani. Molti vescovi stanno adottando l'approccio tradizionale della chiesa cioè guardare alla teologia per trovare idee e tentare di imporle sulla realtà. Questo non funziona oggi. Papa Francesco è stato critico nei confronti degli ideologi di destra e di sinistra che tentano di imporre le loro idee alle persone senza considerare la realtà della vita delle persone. Come ha detto Francesco, "i fatti sono più importanti delle idee". Un secondo approccio all'ascolto è capire ciò che i giovani pensano della chiesa per scoprire come la chiesa deve cambiare. Il terzo approccio all'ascolto è insegnare ai giovani di ascoltare il loro sé interiore più autentico e in esso trovarvi lo Spirito.
