BEYOND THE NEW EVANGELIZATION: TOWARDS A MISSIONARY ECCLESIOLOGY FOR THE TWENTY-FIRST CENTURY - OLTRE LA NUOVA EVANGELIZZAZIONE: VERSO UNA ECCLESIOLOGIA MISSIONARIA PER IL VENTUNESIMO SECOLO

“The new evangelization emerged out of the concern of two European popes in the context of a radically secularized Europe on the one hand and a church that, to their minds, had lost the clarity of commitment to the content of the faith in the wake of Vatican II on the other. Pope Francis’s call for a truly missionary church comes out of a totally different context, and reflects not a European interest but that of the majority world”. “Our time calls forth a church that moves beyond what has been called the new evangelization to the formation of a community of disciples, and ecclesiology for our times has to reflect that community’s life and practice as it participates in the mission of God”. These are the words of the theologian S. Bevans in the article presented here. Bevans suggests the idea of rethinking  ecclesiology in the light of missiology in line with the teaching of Pope Francis, who insists that the church should be a ‘community of missionary disciples’.

“La nuova evangelizzazione è emersa dalla preoccupazione di due papi europei nel contesto di un'Europa radicalmente secolarizzata, ma anche da una chiesa che aveva perso la chiarezza dell’impegno per il contenuto della fede, sulla scia del Concilio Vaticano II. L'appello di Papa Francesco per una Chiesa veramente missionaria esce da un contesto totalmente diverso, e non riflette un interesse europeo, ma quella della maggioranza del mondo”. “Il nostro tempo invita la chiesa ad andar oltre la nuova evangelizzazione, verso la formazione di una comunità di discepoli missionari; una ecclesiologia per il nostro tempo deve riflettere la vita e l’operato di quella comunità in quanto partecipe della missione di Dio”.  Queste le parole del teologo S. Bevans nell’articolo qui presentato. Bevans propone di ripensare l’ecclesiologia a partire dalla missiologia in linea con il magistero di Papa Francesco il quale insiste sull’idea che la Chiesa deve essere una ‘comunità di discepoli missionari’.
